For better or worse, I have pledged to root
for my team regardless of their actions.
They may not always win, but they are always entertaining.

Introduction:

It's a good thing I like challenges because there is nothing more challenging than being a Lions Fan!  (Those of you reading this who are also fans know exactly what I mean).  But I got to tell you, I think that Matt & Marty Mooch (hey, I have the right to change my mind, don't I?) are building a quality team, but not everyone agrees and that should make for some diverse estimates of their abilities.  I thought it would be fun to post the beliefs of fellow forum members before the season begins just to see how well we can foresee the unforeseeable, hence the prediction contest on the right.

LionBacker Topsites List

Opinions & Commentaries

2005 Wins: Bears, Bucs, Panthers, Browns, Bears, Cards, Cowboys, Bengals, Saints, Steelers (as the Steelers won't be playing their starters in that game), and either the first game against Green Bay or the home game against the Baltimore Ravens.

2005 Losses: Vikings, Falcons, Vikings, Packers there, and then either the first game against the Packers or the Ravens game.

Total Prediction 11-5.

2005 Addendum to below:

Congratulations Matt Millen on getting the safety you targeted in Free Agency.  I didn't think it could happen with the cap the Lions have, but you did it!  You even got Garcia and DeMulling (guard) already, and it's only mid March.  The Pollard pickup for the starting TE job was pretty interesting as well.  Now I still expect a WR in FA, to possibly take Hakim's place as the #3.  So, assuming that happens, then my draft goes something like this:

#3QB, #3TE, #2FB, #4WR, #4DT, #4S  (not necessarily in that order).

Those are the depth positions I think we should draft. If they want to play or start, they will need to beat out someone in camp.

That's as it should be.

If we can trade down, I'd add a #4OT, #4OG, #4DE, and/or a #6LB.

If we can not trade down, I have no idea who to take at #10, since I'm looking at all backup positions. But I would really wish for a DE/DT I think at this point, a player who could start and help the team immediately (making either Big Daddy or Redding a backup).

Opinion 2005 (Roster Moves in 2005, predicted March 1st, day before FA begins):

I foresee Az Hakim and Brock Marion taking a significant pay cut or being cut.  Only thing is, since there is no rush, that may wait until after the draft to ensure that adequate replacements are on the roster.  They may even make it to training camp, though I doubt it (Millen will want the cap space in July).

I believe the #2 QB will be Garcia, unless Warner accepts a much lower salary figure than what Garcia requests.  I believe the clipboard holder will be a draft pick from the second day, or even an undrafted player.

I can see Millen picking up a quality wide receiver in free agency, right about the time the backup QB is signed.  I also foresee Millen attempting to land a quality Safety in free agency, but failing to do so.  A free agent guard/tackle may also be in the works, but not until the first part of April, and he'll be competing for a job with our last year's depth and new draft picks.

In the draft, if the Lions can trade down, I predict a Safety, a Guard/Tackle, and a Tight End will be the first three picks (not necessarily in that order).  If the Lions can not trade down, then I can see them taking a DT at #10 to partner with Rogers.  Then Safety next, they may even trade up to get one in the first round, losing their 3rd round pick, but only if a free agent is not landed.

After that, I will predict a long shot, and that is that Joey Harrington will start all 16 games as a Lion in 2005, and will also be the QB in the first round of the playoffs.  Beyond that, I'm not going to even guess.

~][~

Opinion 2004 (Roster Moves in 2004, Predicted end of December 2003):

I foresee Luther Ellis either taking a significant pay cut, being cut, or being traded in 2004.  Then Robert Porcher will either retire or end up getting cut unless there is a very good reason for his reduction in his production this year (other than age), should he stay, it won't be for the $3 million in salary he's scheduled to earn in 2004.  I also see James Stewart taking a pay cut, being cut, or being traded.  However, Millen's first move next year will be to cut Bill Schroeder (unless he can contain himself and look for some type of trade offer, which I don't expect he'll get).

In Free Agency I can easily see acquiring Tai Streets (WR-49ers).  He's already stated he wants to move back to the Midwest and Mooch is his former coach and the Lions need a good #2 Receiver.  The fit is too perfect not to happen.  But if it doesn't happen, then  Darrell Jackson from Seattle is my next choice (another WCO trained WR).  I fervently hope that Plummer (CB-49ers) is also signed by the Lions assuming Champ Bailey isn't available.  After CB and WR#2, our needs switch to Safety and RB. Trading down to get both in round 1 is the ideal situation, but if that's not an option, then Taylor in the 1st and one of the remaining Running Backs in the 2nd.  If Taylor is gone, then Kevin Jones or Steven Jackson from Oregon State in the 1st round and a Safety in round 2 is an option.  This leaves picking up two guards in free agency (I like Jeno James - Carolina & Chris Dishman - Arizona), drafting a Defensive End in round 3, and then taking care of depth at TE, WR, and LB in rounds 3 through 7.

As the season draws to a close my opinion may change on the above, so I reserve the right to change it.  :-)
